Memorial Weekend at the Flora Bama Yacht Club

Flora Bama Yacht Club

I wanted to share our family experience at the Flora-Bama Yacht Club Memorial Weekend 2015.  My family and I live in Fairhope, which is little under an hour’s drive northwest of this popular attraction.  We sold our boat last year, thus we were looking for something low-key to do locally where we could enjoy the water, good food and possibly some live music.  The Flora-Bama Yacht Club seemed like the most logical spot, as the boardwalk area in the heart of Gulf Shores would likely be too congested and difficult to find.  Also, the Flora-Bama is often the destination of choice after the sun sets beneath the emerald green gulf waters and we have two children under the age of 10.

For those totally unfamiliar with the “The Bama” as it affectionately known by the natives, it is super popular gulf beach attraction located on Perdido Key in Pensacola, adjacent to the Florida-Alabama state line.  This is more than your traditional beach bar, hosting an annual songwriter festival, home of some of the most potent bushwhackers on the gulf coast and a cultural landmark for decades.  This was the place to party in the summertime when I was growing up, as it drew large crowds of beautifully sun-kissed people looking to celebrate the season into the wee hours of the morning.  Today, the old dive bar has been given a face-lift by new ownership and expanded to include two additional restaurants on the Old River side of Perdido Beach Boulevard, as well as marina with boat and jet-ski rentals.

The Flora-Bama Yacht Club is an ideal spot for us to relax on a sunny Saturday of Memorial Weekend 2015 with great food, drinks, live music and bathrooms all at our disposal.  It is $5 to park all day and you can bring a cooler, beach chairs and sand toys for the kids.  It is very family friendly during the day, with many parents and kids arriving by boat.  The adults can enjoy live music and frosty beverages, while kids play in the sand and splash in the calm, current less, salt water.  On this occasion, I ordered the grilled mahi tacos, which were quite possibly the best fish tacos I have ever had.  My wife had the seared tuna wrap, which was beautiful in presentation but lacked a bold flavor that you would expect with so many colorful ingredients.  Our son, Cooper, loves the char-grilled oysters, with garlic butter and a blend of Parmesan and Romano cheeses.

We spent the majority of our weekend at the Flora-Bama Yacht Club, lounging in the sun and enjoying the live music on Saturday and renting a large pontoon boat for our talented Jason Will Real Estate sales agents and their families on Sunday.  The entire Flora-Bama staff, to include hostesses, servers, bartenders and the boat rental guys all seemed dedicated to providing an quality experience.  I would say that we have definitely found our favorite hangout in the Orange Beach area!
