Bessemer City

Bessemer City

Located in the heart of central Alabama, just outside of Birmingham, Bessemer, is a hidden gem of a city that is rich with history. Founded in 1887, Bessemer grew quickly in the early days through iron ore manufacturing. The founding population of Bessemer was less than 5,000; however, that would double by 1910, and almost double again by 1920. Since then, the city has experienced steady growth. Due to this growth, Bessemer was nicknamed “The Marvel City”. Now the city of Bessemer is home to about 27,000 residents, and growth continues to be a focus of the area.

As a “business-friendly” city, Bessemer is a hub in western Jefferson County and drives economic development in the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan area. This city is home to many major industries and corporations, including Amazon, Steyr Arms USA, Dollar General, BLOX and Milo’s Tea. Bessemer is also home to Medical West Hospital and the Bessemer Municipal Airport; the airport is a preferred destination for small plane traffic in the area.

Large corporations are not the only business seeing success in this area! Small businesses of all sorts are making Bessemer home for their operations. All this increase in new businesses has created more customers for the existing local businesses, which has been great for the local economy.

With these thriving businesses, Bessemer sees a regular influx of new residents and families moving to the area. Many of these new residents are drawn to Bessemer due to its close proximity to Birmingham. The short 20-minute commute allows those who work in the Birmingham-Hoover Metro area to escape the hustle and bustle of the city at the end of the day, while still being close to all the convenient city amenities they know and love.

For those who don’t wish to make the commute to Birmingham, Bessemer has lots to offer, including renowned Southern restaurants, fine dining of all sorts, shopping, Alabama’s Splash Adventure, Bessemer Civic Center, Bessemer Hall of History, and the Autobahn Indoor Speedway. For those who love the outdoors, Bessemer is home to the Watercress Darter National Wildlife Refuge, as well as numerous other parks, trails and other outdoor areas for all to enjoy. The city of Bessemer strives to create an inviting environment for new families who are looking to put down roots.

These new families want to purchase homes, and Bessemer has a number of options to offer. Housing prices are relatively low; the market is competitive but not too overwhelming. New residents can find homes in a variety of price ranges as well as a variety of styles and varying newness. If residents want to embrace the history of the town they need only find their way to the Historic District where many of the neighborhoods are filled with homes that date back to the early 20th century. If a more modern build is what they are looking for, they will have their pick of the litter, because new homes are being built in the area on a regular basis.
