Now, for the best information about this property, please avail yourself to the following unedited comments of the sellers themselves, regarding important details that do not readily meet the eye:
Jason: How did you know this was the home you were meant to buy?
Sellers: “The minute we walked in, we knew this was our home! At the time, we thought forever! We loved the vaulted, board and baton ceilings , all of the light we get from the back and the private back yard! We wanted a first floor master and a guest room. We loved the kitchen, the different colored stone counters, installed by a local decorator. We love the hardwood floors and the house just had a personality…not the seen one, seen them all type of cottage. We wanted to be able to walk to town and soon turned the carport into my artist studio! The attic storage off the second floor holds an incredible amount of stuff! My husband was thrilled that it was newer!”
Jason: Were schools a factor in your decision to purchase this home?
Sellers: “Schools were not a factor for us, but we knew the Fairhope School System has a wonderful reputation should we later decide to sell.”
Jason: What have become your top 5-10 favorite features of the home?
Sellers: “Most of all, we love the cheerful, bright open floor plan. After dinner, we would walk down town for an ice cream cone and a stroll around town, window shopping. During festivals, we don’t have to find a parking spot! We really miss our perfect little cottage. After I built the studio, which has heat and air as well as the sink when water is needed, I spent a great deal of time out there! The central vac is quiet and very effective and my husband loves the in ground sprinkler system. Miss Jean, the older lady next door, bakes us fresh muffins from time to time. She is a true sweetheart! As seniors we take full advantage of free tuition at nearby Faulkner and my husband loves the proximity of the library. Between Mardi Gras, Christmas parades, Friday night Art walk, we were in the perfect and most convenient location! Because we were in town, our friends would pop by while they were in town. We just loved the location. It is a quiet and secluded back yard, yet you can just walk to library classes and all downtown activities.”
Jason: Where do you find yourself spending the most time in this beautiful Downtown Fairhope cottage and why?
Sellers: “We are in the open living room a lot. The gas fireplace adds coziness in the winter and I can watch the birds, the squirrels and my flower beds. I love the bookcases and rearranging my collection of pottery. Our bedroom held an ample King sized bed with night stands, an armoire and a dressing table. My husband loved the built in office nook upstairs, though I always thought it was an ideal location to tuck in a built in twin trundle!”
Jason: What improvements have you made to the home or property over the years?
Sellers: “We added gutters and permanent hurricane shutters. The channels are permanently connected to the house and the panels slip right in. We have one panel that allows daylight in, should the need arise. We enclosed the carport into my studio. There is a sink in the studio that drains into the back flower bed. It has a heat/air unit in the wall that is more than adequate and pull down stairs for additional storage. The studio has a back porch wired for a kiln. It is a perfect hideaway! The house has tilt in, insulated Windows for easy cleaning and we have added an electrostatic air filter.”
Jason: What are your favorite grocery stores and shops in the downtown area?
Sellers: “Greer’s market is just around the corner and larger groceries like Winn Dixie are in a couple of miles. The Page and Palette Book Store and connected coffee shop are fun in the mornings and fresh beignets are right there in the French Quarter for a great morning breakfast. There are many clothing shops, galleries and specialty shops, all in walking distance. As a senior over 60 and an Alabama resident, tuition is free at all two year colleges, so I walk across the street to Faulkner State and take as many classes as my heart desires. My husband is the library’s best customer! Thomas Hospital and medical complex is just a few blocks away.”
Jason: Do you have any interests or hobbies you enjoy on or near your property on Ettle Street?
Sellers: “I am a potter, painter and writer, so the studio was a must. I had extra windows put in with a special, antique window from a church in Pennsylvania added to the front. The studio is fully insulated and has thermal windows, so it is comfy during any season. City ordinances require hurricane panels, so they are cut to size from plywood and live on the covered back porch of the studio.”
Jason: Average utility costs in summer and winter?
Sellers: “Average costs, combined electric, gas, water and sewer run about $200 per month. The nice thing is they are all paid to the City of Fairhope. The house has underground utilities.”
Jason: What will you miss most about living in or owning this property, as well as the surrounding Fairhope community?
Sellers: “We already miss it so much and have a serious bout of sellers remorse! We moved only because a grown daughter has had to move home due to illness and the stairs just didn’t work! We miss our in town location, our sweet neighbors and mostly our Wee Cottage!”
Jason: If you don’t mind me asking, why have you decided to sell your home?
Sellers: “As mentioned above, our eldest daughter has become ill, had to move home with us to care for her and we simply needed more space. Our new home is lovely but does not have the location or pizazz as did our Wee Cottage! We hope you will love and enjoy this special home as much as we did! I promise you, the location could not be better. It is a warm, loving home; a Fairhope cottage that is not old with all the town has to offer at your finger tips and no ” old house” blues!”
